Moderation: Irmgard Heilberger, IFFF/WILPF, Deutschland
WILPF is putting on the table the gender perspective of disarmement. In oder to de-militarise the society and prevent violence, WILPF has supported all international disarmament treaties and is engaged to re-enforce and fully implement them. WILPF requests the elimination of small arms as well as the control and ban of new threats against humanity such as for example the nuclearisation of space. A more holistic approach of “ Human security” needs further efforts in all dimensions of disarmament.
Since decades women see always more clearly, especially those living in conflict zones how important peace and disarmament are in order to create better conditions of life and work and to reach gender justice. Disarmament is the necessary pre-condition to ban conflicts, to avoid wars and liberate resources for better economic and social conditions for women, their families and communities.
Regina Hagen, Germany (Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and Coordinator of INESAP (International network of Engineers and scientists against proliferation) and Susi Snider/USA, Geneva (General Secretary of WILPF and Coordinator of „Reaching critical will“ (http://www.reachingcriticalwill.org/) will inform about new initiatives and measures in the disarmament sector.
Regina Hagen, participated in New York during the7th NPT revision conference and can present, that even 35 years after the treaty the reason for the treaty gets lost. There is no way to speak any longer about nuclear disarmament. The double standards of the arguments are clear. While the USA call their qualitative re-armament with new transport systems and nuclear warheads „disarmament“ measures (because other parts of theirs superfluous arsenals are reduced) they are threatening countries like Iran with military intervention, if they will not renounce on ( so called civilian) nuclear plans.
The dangers of armament are going far beyond the earth: „The space has a more fundamental and important role, as only to re-enforce armies. It is not anymore a luxury, but precondition for military operations . Space is of elementary interest for our national interests. We have to stop the arms race there.“(R.H)
In this situation, NGOs and a critical public have a high responsibility in the abolition campaign. The project „Reaching critical will“ (http://www.reachingcriticalwill.org/) lead by the American Susi Snyder, is linking the scientific discussion with networking and international actions. „Only the pressure of many people on the national level and worldwide on governments can assure, that international law is binding for everybody in the same way: for those who don’t have anything as well as for those who have nuclear materials. The danger of proliferation is banned only if all countries renounce on the instrument of nuclear power. Our aim is a nuclear free world.
