Considerable research on structural adjustment policies and on WTO have shown that trade liberalisation, investment, commercialisation of agricultural activities, deprivation of women farmers of their traditional knowledge and privatisation of social services result in increased gender inequalities and new forms of social exclusion. The European Union has been one of the leading forces in pushing a corporate agenda for global trade and continued investment liberalisation that have proven to be detrimental to women’s human rights.

The workshop will focus on alternative feminist economics as a key element to challenge the neo-liberal paradigm. After a presentation of the current feminist challenges within the current economic framework promoted by the EU, speakers will present some initiatives such as WIDE economic literacy program that aims at unpacking the economic analysis and policy and gender budgeting.
