Durda Knezevic, Croatia
born 1952, has a degree in History and Archeology. Durda Knezevic has been active in the women's movement and organizations in former Yugoslavia and Croatia for more than twenty-five years. Since its establishing, she is a member of the first and most active feminist organization, Woman and Society, which was founded and registered in 1977. In 1990 she was the first coordinator of the Independent Association of Women in Croatia. Two years later Ðurda Kneževic co-founded the Center for Women War Victims and the Women's Infoteka, Women's Information and Documentation Center, in Zagreb, Croatia. In 1994 she founded the feminist magazine Bread and Roses (Kruh i ruže) where she is a chief editor. Since 2000, she has developed and coordinated an international project "Building women's information and documentation centers" that involves 15 transitional countries. During all these years of acitivities, she has published numbers of articles, essays and interviews on women's issues, history and the peace-processes in post-Yugoslavian countries.
Dr. Sima Samar, Afghanistan
born 1957, serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Women's Affairs for the Interim Administration of Afghanistan. Sima Samar graduated from Kabul University Medical College in 1982. She practiced medicine at a government hospital in Kabul, but after a few months was forced to flee for her safety to her native Jaghori, where she provided medical treatment to patients throughout the remote areas of Central Afghanistan. In 1984, she fled to Pakistan. After working as a doctor at the refugee branch of the Mission Hospital and distressed by the total lack of health care facilities for Afghan refugee women, she started a hospital for Afghan refugee women and children in Quetta. In 1989, she established the Shuhada Organization and Shuhada Clinic. The Shuhada Organization is dedicated to the provision of health care to Afghan women and girls, training of medical staff and to eductation. In 2001, Sima Samar returned to Afghanistan to assume her cabinet post after 17 years in exile in Pakistan.
Prof. Dr. Svetlana Slaspak, Slovenia
born 1948, is Professor for Anthropology of the Gender-Co-ordinator, Ljubljana Graduate School Humanities. Svetlana Slapsak has a MA and PhD in Classical Studies / Linguistics of the University of Beograd. From 1968-72 she was engaged in the student movement. In 1970 she was editor-in-chief of a satitirical periodical Frontisterion which was destroyed in print by the police. Svetlana Slapsak was denied her passport form 1968-73, 74-76, and 87-89. Since 1983 she has published political commentaries on a regular base in Literary Word, Beograd. From 1986-89 she was President of the Committee for the protection of freedom of expression at the Writers' Association of Serbia. Since 1995 she has been teaching at ISH, Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis, a postgraduate school in humanities in Ljubljana. Since 1996 she has been engaged in a Toronto University project on comparative histories of Central and Eastern literary cultures. Svetlana Slapsak has publishes numerous articles and books.

Heidi Meinzolt-Depner, Germany
born 1952, is working as a teacher. From 1982 until 2001 Heidi Meinzolt-Depner was member of the Green Party with questions of peace, European and International Affairs being focal points of her work. She was head of the Bavarian Green Party, Spokesperson of the federal working group of the Green Party on Europe, head of the European Greens. Since 1992 she has been member of WILPF (Women's International League for Peace and Freedom), representant of the German section of WILPF and European coordinator. Heidi Meinzolt-Depner is active in NGOs like the Nord-Süd-Forum (North-South Forum), CIPRA (International Commission for the Protection of the Alps), traffic initiatives.

Halina Bendkowski, Germany
Sociologist, feminist action researcher with regard to gender democracy. In 1991, after the Gulf War started, she co-founded SCHEHERAZADE, an international women's action group. Since then, she has been engaged in the project of a World Women's Security Council (WWSC) together with Ute Scheub, SCHEHERAZADE initiator. After September 11, 2001, she stayed in NY in order to do research for Scheherazade and to seek political support for the WWSC in- and outside the UN / NGO scene.

Prof. Dr. Claudia von Braunmühl, Germany
born 1944, honorary professor for International Politics, faculty Political and Social Sciences FU Berlin. Claudia von Braunmühl studied political science at the Otto-Suhr-Institute of the FU Berlin. From 1968-79 she was research associate at the Social Sciences faculty of the J.W.G. University Frankfurt. She was visiting professor at the Department of Politics at the University of Edinburgh in 1976/77. From 1980-84 she was working as respresentative for the German Development Service (DED) in Jamaica. Since 1984 Claudia von Braunmühl has worked as an independent development expert and teacher, mainly in Berlin. Since 1996 she is honorary professor for International Politics, faculty Political and Social Sciences FU Berlin. Claudia von Braunmühl has published numerous articles and books in the field of international politics, development politics, feminism and gender.
Dr. Amira Gelblum, Germany
Historian (German History and Women's History). Amira Gelblum has been a feminist and peace activist for many years, including being among the founders of Women in Black and the feminist magazine Noga. She is a member of left-wing and peace organizations such as Women and Peace, Bat Shalom, the Coalition of Women for Just Peace and a board member of the Community School for Women.
