Newly founded: Gunda Werner Institute for Feminism & Gender Democracy
The Feminist Institute and the Joint Taskforce for Gender Democracy at the Heinrich Boell Foundation are exploring new ways of dealing with feminism and gender democracy. The two were merged earlier this year to form the new Gunda Werner Institute for Feminism and Gender Democracy within the Heinrich Boell Foundation. The new institute is designed to enhance the political capacity and to generate the development of socio-political alternatives outside of the mainstream by pooling available resources, by coordinating the different approaches, perspectives and practices in a novel and focused way, by expanding the existing networks, and by winning over new allies.
The new Institute has the following Tasks and Goals
- To exemplarily examine current and important sociopolitical issues and questions
- To correlate feminist, gender political, and gender democratic perspectives and bring these into politics and practice
- To participate in European and international discourses and make these fruitful
- To support the creation of gender-oriented political education courses and to offer advice, both internally as well as externally
- To promote the political participation of women and gender-competent individuals
Concretely, this means that, in the national and international arena, we will
- promote feminist theory and practice and will pursue agenda setting,
- enhance gender-expertise and strengthen emancipatory networks,
- will promote politics of gender equality and gender mainstreaming.
We will do this through the medium of:
- new media: the further expansion of the virtual portal GLOW of the Feminist Institute and its consolidation with the internet presence of the Gender Democracy Institute to form a worldwide virtual networking, information and learning platform for questions on gender and feminism (available in two languages)
- various types of events, including symposia, conferences and workshops
- events that promote dialogue and discussion, such as Ladies Lunch and Men's Forum
- publications, such as journal series on gender and feminism, dossiers and discussion papers
The main areas of focus for our work in the coming years:
1. Gender Constellations of the Future
- Peace and Security Policy
The advancement of theories and political debates on the question of the role and importance of gender in peace and security policy; Networking activities and lobbying for the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 in the European peace and security policy as well as in the international realm
- Self-supporting
The ability for everyone to be able to meet his or her needs is the precondition of a fair and equitable society; In 2007: focus on the debate of basic income and basic security from feminist and gender democratic perspectives
2. The Strengthening of Gender Expertise
- Gender Politics in Europe
An exchange of ideas and experiences, the development of new fields of action, new options for action as well as new strategies for the EU politics, EU Project "Fit for Gender Mainstreaming - crossing gender sensitive boundaries between east and west" (A qualifying measure for trainers in gender issues and political consultants as well as a series of events in four partner countries: Poland, Czech Republik, Austria and Germany)
- Furthering the Discussion of Feminism and Gender Democracy
Opening a platform for discussion and reflection in the form of Ladies Lunch, Men's Forum, Working Group GenderGreen and international dialogue
