About the Feminist Institute (FI) |
Building Bridges Between Theory and Practice

The
Feminist
Institute
- is an experimental workshop focused on current women’s policy issues that reflects on traditional issues in a new way and on novel issues from an unconventional angle.
- sets up a number of interdisciplinary and global networks linking future-oriented research approaches with current debates.
- provides an environment where women from academia, the arts, the public and the private sectors can exchange information and find orientation and support.
- questions political (power) strategies and plans of action to give impulses to sustainable gender-sensitive policies from a feminist perspective
- encourages the next generation of feminists and supports women from all origins
- sets women’s policy issues on the agenda
Autonomy and Integration
Conceived of as a bridge, the Feminist Institute acts as a mediator between feminist theory and feminism in practice. The FI evaluates women’s experiences and knowledge, debates these publicly, and finally, transfers these into the relevant institutions and organizations through practical policies.
The FI develops its own concepts within the thematic range of the Heinrich Boell Foundation. Following the motto, “autonomy and integration,” the FI works on developing feminist theory while also challenging the Foundation to work towards a gender-oriented profile.
The FI was founded in 1998, picking up the thread of the former Frauenanstiftung, which successfully supported women’s projects and liberation movements in societies all over the world.
