Biography

Ulrike Allroggen was born in 1969 in Berlin, where she studied Political Science at the Free University. Her ongoing political engagement was sparked by her critical reflections on Gandhi, de Beauvoir, Arendt, and Luxemburg; her project-based stays in India, where she met among others, Medha Patkar and activists of the Narmada Movement; her involvement with the “Greenhouse Gathering” in 1995 in Berlin, as well as the renewed public debate around Paragraph 218 (abortion) in the early 90s in Germany. Since the late 90s, she has been active in transnational citizen networks working for a more democratic and federal Europe. For several years, she has also been a free-lance lecturer in the field of youth and adult political education under the motto, “In the mood for politics?! – Intervention Now!.” Her main interests include: European integration / social movements in Europe / constitutionality of the EU (questions concerning democracy, enlargement, the “borders of Europe”); feminist theory / international women’s movements / women’s and equal opportunity policies / gender mainstreaming; Eastern Europe and South Asia.
Ulrike Allroggen is a member of the German Green Party, the Humanist Union and the executive board of the Heinrich Boell Foundation’s Education Center.

Until the end of 2005, Ulrike Allroggen was the assistant to the director of the Feminist Institute. Since 2006, she is the representative for gender democracy and is working on the interaction between the theoretical and political approaches to feminism and gender democracy. Currently, the departments responsible for these issues in the Heinrich Boell Foundation - the Feminist Institute and the Department for Gender Democracy - are in the process of transforming into a common unit. Learn more about this process at [in eigener Sache (German only)]
