Thinking about violence we would, as the media continually reports, most obviously associate war and terrorism.
Nevertheless one of the major threats to human safety is the violence perpetrated in the immediate private sphere. The World Health Organisation (WHO), warns that significantly more people die due to interpersonal violence than because of threats like terrorism and war. As a first step we will discuss security from a gender perspective.

We should ask about: what is security for whom - whose security is at stake, when and where. Accordingly we will focus on the problem of domestic violence, which should be regarded as a national political priority and dealt with in a broader political framework, with government, parliament and civil society involvement referring to the recommendations of the Council of Europe. After the extent and the forms of domestic violence have been made visible, we will deal with strategies to overcome it.  Domestic violence, one of the biggest human rights` scandals world wide, is rooted in all spheres of our society. Thus we will look at strategies to prevent and combat domestic violence at different levels. In the beginning of the following session we would like  to introduce international conventions, which can be referred to in claiming human rights for women. Then, we will look at the societal level.

The Bread for the World Partner Organisation Padare from Zimbabwe will describe its approach to integrate men into the battle against domestic violence. Subsequently, an integrated project from Uganda targeting the community as a whole - from victim to perpetrator, from traditional stakeholders to the media – will be presented in order to stimulate a change of attitudes. Finally, we will discuss the obstacles to overcoming domestic violence and have a look at means to broaden and improve our work in order to combat domestic violence more effectively in future.
