Women are seen as the job winners of globalisation, benefiting from capital mobility and foreign direct investment. Where countries with labour-intensive export production have entered the world market, women were a competitive advantage as a source of cheap labour. Since the First World Conference on Women 1975, the percentage of women amongst all income earners has doubled to 40 % today. Progress made, however, is ambivalent and extremely uneven not only between regions but also among women in the individual countries.
On the one hand, the market liberalisation destroys livelihoods and previous subsistence oriented economies. On the other hand, trade liberalisation accelerates the access of women to employment, but spins them out again due to the intensified cost-cutting global competition. While in many countries social security systems are missing, unpaid care and reproductive labour within the household and community is mostly done by women.
- What are the challenges and perspectives of the global future of work?
- How do women and women’s jobs migrate?
- What are women’s strategies with reference to the relevance of the women’s human rights approach and the Millenium Development Goals?
- How should international regimes with regard to mobility and security be set up?
Dorothea Schmidt will speak about world wide trends of employment and productivity. Christa Wichterich will give an input about women in insecure and informal employment. Zo Randriamaro will discuss the impact of trade liberalisation on women's livelihoods and labour in Africa and Cecilia Lopez will speak about the impact of trade liberalisation on women's livelihoods and labour in Latin America.
