  Gender-Based Violence

Sustainable Security Policy needs a Gender Perspective

A gender perspective has been largely ignored and neglected from the mainstream discussions about security policy.

  | Cambodia Passes Anti-Trafficking Bill
The Civil Society of Cambodia has welcomed the passsage of a bill to tackle the issue of trafficking women and children. The law aims to combat human trafficking and sex trade activities to protect human rights and human dignity and increase the healthcare and welfare of the people.
Local human rights organisation, LICADO, says Cambodia is walking on the right path in campaigning against human trafficking.
If one speaks of military violence as the only factor in peace and security issues, gender-specific violence is forcibly ignored. This affects the topic of trafficking in women, as well as that of forced marriage and gender mutilation.

The Feminist Institute focuses on security policy from a feminist perspective. On this page we provide an introduction to the debates in specific areas of violence against women.

Current news on issues of sexual violence against women:
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan released a press release for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, 2006. In this document Annan discusses the sociopolitical and global dimensions of violence against women. Download the text as a >> PDF File

TRAFFICKING IN WOMEN

The topic of the trafficking in women is largely ignored in mainstream debates about security policy, despite the fact that the extent of human trafficking now excedes that of the drug and arms trade. It is a good example of security policy that is dominated by men and their priorities. Although awareness of the topic has grown in recent years, ignorance of the plight of women and girls who are trafficked prevails. Most importantly, viable political strategies to solve the trafficking crisis do not exist.

On this page you will find a variety of links: a brief overview of the topic, information about political strategies and non-governmental initiatives, and suggested literature.
