Gender in the United Nations |
Lobbying in the International Arena
 |
The Feminist Institute pursues its current focus "Peace, Security and Violence" in the international arena. Seen from a historical and poltical perspective, the United Nations is the institution that symbolizes and works towards peace-oriented politics in the international arena. For this reason the Feminist Institute examines and analyzes gender issues in the context of the United Nations. |
The Politics of the United Nations
The politics of the United Nations are an important component to the question of gender issues. The Feminist Institute is very active in the work of the the German Women's Security Council, whose focus it is to fully implement UN Resolution 1325. For the first time in its history, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution, which is binding under international law, that requires the equal participation of women in all decisions about peace and security policy, hereby creating a gender-sensitive peace and security policy. The full implementation of the resolution is now of utmost importance and difficulty.

For some time now, the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) have been on the agendas of government agencies and non-governmental organizations alike. Their implementation and expansion provide the necessary foundation in fight against poverty, which disproportionately affects women. Precisely for this reason, the MDGs also need to be analyzed and critically scrutinized from a gender perspective. You can find out more about the Millenium Development Goals from a gender perspective [here]
The Structure of the United Nations
Since 2005, an intense discussion has been underway about the reform of the United Nations. Part of this discussion must include, from a feminist perspective, the question of gender relations. For this reason the Feminist Institute follows the debates and reform initiatives closely, documents them on GLOW, and offers a space for critical voices from a wide spectrum of feminist positions.
