Themes and Challenges for Feminism in Everyday Life
To be a feminist automatically connects one to a lifestyle in which authority is constantly questioned and challenged. In addition to the central theme of the second wave of feminism-- namely, that an individual's personal life is indisputably political-- various themes at various times have played an important role for feminism in the everyday life. An examination of today's feminist-political themes, reveals a broad, geographically-differentiated, and diverse spectrum of content.

Abortion The women's movement in Europe and North America in the 1970s, placed the topic of abortion rights at the heart of its agenda. Similar efforts, movements, and successes have since happened in countries around the world. Although gains in abortion rights have been made around the world, the fight is far from over. From Poland to Nicaragua, restrictive abortion laws are being passed that negate past successes. A woman's control over her own body is under serious threat. |

HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS also has a gender-specific dimension that must be considered. Poverty and social marginaltization as a result of HIV infection are especially common for women. Differences in the way the disease affects men and women and the role of gender in treatment for the disease, require further research. In addition, women are disproportionately affected by the societal consequences of the disease. In regions of Africa where the HIV/AIDS infection rate is particularly high, grandmothers must assume child-rearing duties, girls must drop out of school to care for the sick, and mothers bear the brunt of the economic and social responsibility for their families.

Discussions about feminist or gender economics usually begin with the division of paid and unpaid labor along gender lines, the valuation and deep-set societal role of care-giving, or the economic injustices and their consequences locally and internationally.
While the relevance of gender in relation to work and employment is generally undisputed, it is generally not accepted as a lens of analysis in other areas of economics. On the other hand, gender is playing an ever more dominant role in discussions about globalization and in the critique of globalization.

Theorists and activists alike acknowledge the importance of including a gender perspective in the analysis of economic issues and in the implementation of economic reforms. This can be seen in the innovative use of microcredits, which are often targeted at women: the economic empowerment of women is closely related to sustainable development.

The inflationary and unclear use of the term "fundamentalism" in the past years requires, especially when its use is reduced to certain groups and religions, must be pursued. Women's rights are often called into question by fundamentalist movements of all kinds. Feminist perspectives are cleary needed.

Globalization in the sense of a increasingly powerful, global interconnectedness affects various areas: economics, politics, culture, environment, scholarship, etc. Globalization has different consequences for the rich than for the poor, for people living in the global South than for those in the North, for women than for men.
Life in globalized world is characterized by the interconnectedness of various forms of authority; in other words, patriarchy, capitalism, imperialism, racism become intertwined. Together, they influence and affect structures as well as individuals. |
The woman of the globalized world does not exist in one form: she is a child worker in a nicaraguan Maquila (a textile factory that delivers its goods to the global market), a successful CEO at a transnational corporation, as well as the head of the G8 summit in the first half of 2007. Despite this diversity, one must look at the big picture. While the overwhelming majority of the underpaid, exploitative jobs (ranging from sweatshop labor in India to black market household help in Germany) are held by women, only a small minority of the top, powerful positions in business and politics are held by women.

In many languages, including German, English, and Spanish, forms of speech have developed that promote gender equality and gender netutrality. Now these forms of speech need to be used! |

Women are crucial to sustainable development initiatives and thus, gender equality and the empowerment of women are crucial aspects of environmentalism. Gender issues have become integrated in major international environmental policy agreements, including the Beijing Platform of Action (1995) and the Millenium Development Goals.
