Sustainable Security Policy Needs a Gender Perspective

Since 2001, the Feminist Institute has concentrated on examining the topics of peace and security policy and conflict from a feminist perspective. On the following pages you will find information about our activities and an overview, as well as in-depth information, about feminist peace and security policy.

Network of Feminist Peace and Security Experts
To address the deficit of a gender perspective in peace and security policy, the German Women’s Security Council (WSC) was founded. It represents over 50 women from research institutes; women’s, human rights, and development organizations; peace initiatives and political foundations; as well as individuals. The WSC urges the German government to develop gender-sensitive security policies and implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The WSC aims to strengthen the role of women in shaping peace and security. [Women’s Security Council]

     UN Reform
In the year of its 60th anniversary, the UN has been gearing up to reform its institutions in order to better deal with new challenges to peace and security. The women's and gender right's movement has been paying close attention to make sure that reforms contain a gender perspective. Reform proposals leading up to the 2005 World Summit in New York this September suffered from gender-blindness, yet women's peace and security issues did make it into the Summit outcome document.    A Milestone: UN Security Council Resolution 1325
UN Security Council Resolution 1325 marks an important milestone in achieving greater gender awareness in the area of peace and security policy. It is the first Security Council decision in UN history calling for women’s equal participation in decisions concerning peace and war that is legally binding under international law.
